Azure Infrastructure Realignment for Enhanced Security and Cost Efficiency

About the Customer

Glomaxia is a global leader in helping businesses expand their reach and increase market presence. They offer solutions to streamline operations, enhance product accessibility, and empower businesses to confidently enter new markets. With extensive infrastructure and expertise, Glomaxia helps companies achieve global growth by providing tools for operational efficiency, sales growth, and market leadership.

Customer Challenge

Glomaxia faced several challenges with its existing Azure infrastructure. Their production sites were hosted on multiple Azure accounts, leading to inefficient resource usage, security vulnerabilities, and a lack of load balancing. This disjointed infrastructure also resulted in manual server adjustments to handle scalability, further increasing inefficiencies. Key pain points included:

  • Multiple Azure accounts leading to resource waste.
  • Absence of load balancing, resulting in performance issues.
  • Inadequate security measures, leaving systems vulnerable.
  • Manual server adjustments for scaling, affecting site performance.
  • High operational costs due to inefficient resource allocation.

Glomaxia sought a solution that would simplify their Azure infrastructure, improve security, implement load balancing, and reduce overall costs.

Solution

IAMOPS proposed a comprehensive Azure infrastructure redesign to address Glomaxia’s challenges and meet their technical requirements. The solution focused on optimizing resource allocation, enhancing security, and improving performance by implementing Azure best practices. Key components of the solution included:

1) Infrastructure Simplification:

  • Consolidation of Azure accounts into a single account to reduce resource duplication and optimize financial resources.

2) Load Balancing:

  • Implementation of Azure Application Gateway for load balancing, ensuring smooth traffic distribution and improved performance during peak usage.

3) Security Enhancements:

  • Integration of private endpoints, VPN access, and IP whitelisting to secure databases and app services. Only authorized users could access these services, and additional security layers were added to prevent unauthorized access.

4) Automation:

  • Adoption of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for resource provisioning, allowing version control and reproducibility. The use of GitHub Actions for CI/CD enabled automated build, test, and deployment processes, reducing human error and increasing collaboration between teams.

5) Monitoring and Feedback:

  • Integration of NewRelic and Azure Application Insights to provide real-time insights into application performance. These tools helped identify and resolve performance issues quickly.

6) Scalability:

  • The new architecture allowed Glomaxia to scale resources dynamically based on demand, ensuring that site performance remained consistent even during high-traffic periods.

The diagram below represents the proposed infrastructure, demonstrating key elements such as Azure load balancing, private endpoints, and the use of automated CI/CD pipelines.

Results & Benefits

The infrastructure overhaul provided the following benefits:

  • Improved Security: Enhanced security through private endpoints, VPN access, and IP whitelisting.
  • Operational Efficiency: The automation of resource provisioning, configuration management, and deployment reduced manual intervention by 60%.
  • Cost Optimization: Consolidating multiple Azure accounts into one resulted in a 66% reduction in infrastructure costs.
  • Scalability and Performance: The implementation of load balancing and dynamic resource scaling improved site performance, especially during peak times.
