Use case
ECS Cost Optimization with Fargate Spot Migration for Resilient Monitoring
- Kajal Mishra
About the Customer
Operlynx provides a real-time operational-efficiency platform for industrial and utility organizations. Their ISO 27001-certified solution, OperlynxSTO, orchestrates and monitors shutdowns, turnarounds, and outages—enabling rapid decision-making, workforce collaboration, and improved accountability for critical lifecycle events
Customer Challenge
Operlynx’s monitoring stack runs on Amazon ECS with AWS Fargate On-Demand, and monthly compute costs were climbing, dipping into areas that strained IT budgets and threatened ROI. While core services demanded uninterrupted availability, several auxiliary components were judged “non-critical” and could handle brief interruptions. Without optimization, ECS spend risked ballooning further, limiting the team’s ability to invest in feature development and deeper analytics.
However, any cost-cutting move had to preserve full observability. An ill-fated downtime or lost log data could blind Operlynx’s operators and undermine the very productivity gains they were seeking.
Solution
IAMOPS designed a phased migration to shift eligible, non-critical ECS services from AWS Fargate On-Demand to AWS Fargate Spot, which can deliver up to 70 % savings on compute capacity. Key elements of our approach:
- Capacity Provider Strategy
We configured Amazon ECS capacity providers to prioritize Spot and automatically fall back to On-Demand if Spot capacity was unavailable, ensuring zero downtime. - Phased Rollout & Validation
- Dev environment: migrated and validated via Amazon CloudWatch metrics, ECS task events, and real-time service logs.
- Prod environment: executed with identical safeguards but excluded the loki-write logging service from Spot migration to guarantee uninterrupted log ingestion.
- Managed-Services Support
IAMOPS provided pre-migration risk assessments, on-site configuration support, and 24/7 post-migration monitoring and incident-response, preserving service continuity and observability.

Results & Benefits
- Monthly ECS compute costs dropped from $275.39 to $143.74, yielding $131.65 in savings (a 47.8 % reduction) while maintaining 100 % uptime and monitoring-stack responsiveness.
- Critical logging (loki-write) remained fully protected on On-Demand, avoiding any data-loss risk.
- The fallback-enabled capacity provider strategy ensured service resilience even during Spot interruptions.
